An update from the Indian Ocean - Torren Martyn

The 35ft sailing boat Calypte tucked into anchorage in the jungle
The idea seemed simple, learn how to sail a boat, then embark on a year-long expedition from the South China Sea up through the Strait of Malacca and out into the Indian Ocean in search of waves.
When Torren Martyn and Aiyana Powell left the east coast of Thailand in early 2022 they had a combined sailing experience of only a few days. The idea was to learn as they went, get a few friends with sailing experience to help through the tricky bits and pick up as much as possible from them along the way. The pair loaned the 35ft sailing boat Calypte from family with the only caveat to eventually deliver it to East Indonesia. From this, the idea for the latest Lost Track journey took hold - take the long way down the exposed side of the Indonesian archipelago and get some waves along the way.
A year later Calypte is on the home straight but still a couple of thousand nautical miles from its destination. Torren and Aiyana are now experienced sailors - the sort of experience that can only be gained by throwing themselves in the deep end and having a crack. Although the images seem idyllic, an adventure like this doesn’t come easy. What you don’t see is the sleepless nights, the endless rolling and tossing of the boat, the break downs, the relentless maintenance and the confined space... But adventures always seem sweeter if it really feels like you had to work to get there. Filmmaker Ishka Folkwell has been visiting the pair throughout their journey aboard Calypte and is currently working on a feature length film that will premiere sometime in 2023. Stay tuned for release dates, but for now, here is a little teaser of what is to come.

What we came for
